7.5mm straight needle for casting off.
Sewing up needle
Any chunky yarn that knits up with 6.5mm needles. About 3 x 50grams.
20sts to 10cm (not really important)
Toe to heel: 25cm
Around foot: 22cm
Heel to top of leg, unwrinkled: 27cm
Starting at the toe: Using 5.5mm needles – cast on 7 sts.
Knit 6 sts and drop 1st cast on stitch off left hand needle and pull yarn tight (beginning tail). Continuing in the round with 2nd needle, pick up and knit one stitch in each cast on loop – 6 stitches on top needle and 6 on bottom needle. Next round: working with 4 needles – k3 onto first needle, k6 on 2nd needle and k3 on 3rd needle.
Knit next needle of 3 sts so that you start rounds in the middle of the sole.
Round 1: Needle 1 – k2, m1, k1
Needle 2 – k1, m1, k4, m1, k1
Needle 3 – k1, m1, k2
Round 2: Knit
Round 3: Needle 1 – k3, m1, k1
Needle 2 - k1, m1, k6, m1, k1
Needles 3 – k1, m1, k3
Continue repeating last 2 rows, making sure you make 1 stitch, 1 stitch in from edge, till you have 40 sts. (10, 20, 10)
Work 36 rows knit.
Gusset: Needle 1: -- k to last st, m1, k1
Needle 2: -- k
Needle 3 – k1, m1, k to end
Next round knit.
Repeat last 2 rounds till you have 54 sts
Needle 1 – 17 sts
Needle 2 – 20 sts
Needle 3 – 17 sts
Note: on last knit round, only knit needles 1 and 2, so that you start to turn heel. Transfer all heel stitches to 1 needle – 34 stitches, and put top of foot stitches onto 2 needles for ease of knitting – 10 sts each.
Turning heel: (working back and forth on heel stitches only)
k20, sl1, k1, psso, k1, turn
sl1, p7, p2tog, p1, turn
sl1, k8, sl1, k1, psso, k1, turn
sl1, p9, p2tog, p1, turn
Continue decreasing each row to:
sl1, p17, p2tog, p1, turn
sl1, k18, sl1, k1, psso – continue working in the round as (next needle k20), (next needle ktog k9), (40 stitches)
This should bring you back to centre heel.
Needle 1 – 10 sts
Needle 2 = 20 sts
Needle 3 – 10 sts.
