Calendar for 2010
The Inner City group calendar for 2010 is now available! Read on for more details about the topics and workshops planned for this year. We still need teachers for a few topics, so please volunteer if you're able.
February 13 - Jenny Hopper and the World of Fibre Geraldine has told you all about this visit by Jenny, a fellow member of the Craft Society. Jenny is a fiber artist with experience in spinning, weaving, knitting, felting, and dyeing. You can read a little about her on this page (http://www.artsandcraftsnsw.com.au/CVWoolWoolfelting.htm), and you can see some examples of her work here (http://www.artsandcraftsnsw.com.au/HandspunsHandknitsWoolfelting1.htm). Jenny will also be bringing some fiber for sale, so bring your wallets if you're interested! March 13 - Book Swap and Lace with Jenny Chiaotto Jenny is a member of the Guild Executive Committee and she taught at the most recent Guild camp. She's also an accomplished lace maker who will be featured on the ABC show "The Collectors" in March. (Oooh, a TV tie-in guest!) She'll be bringing along lace examples from the Lace Study Centre, and she'll also bring along some of her tatting and special shuttles. (As a side project, we'll be selling off our old unwanted books and magazines. Members are encouraged to bring along any books they want to trade or donate to charity. More details on that will be coming from our librarian Kate.) April 10 - Weaving and Splicing Lots of beginners are stymied by the proper way to "weave in ends." We'll discuss different ways to do it, along with alternatives like "knitting in as you go," "Russian joins," and felting (aka "spit splicing"). ** We are looking for 1-2 people to lead this discussion. May 1 (not a normal meeting day!) - One Day Möbius Workshop with Jude Skeers This special workshop will take place at the Glebe Public Library. Jude is an experienced textile artist and designer. You can read more about him here (http://www.black.com.au/html/jude_skeers.html). He taught this workshop at Epping last year but it sold out quickly and not many of us were able to attend. This workshop will be limited to 12 students, and there will be a small fee. (It will only be open to Inner City members to start, but we'll invite other Guild members if we fail to fill all the spots.) We'll be emailing more details about this in the future, so put it in your diaries for now! May 8 - Judy's Magic Cast-On Judy’s Magic Cast-On is a stable, invisible cast-on that’s easy to do and has perfect tension every time. It’s a great way to start a toe-up sock. This practical workshop will involve everyone trying along as they go. ** We are looking for 1-3 people to lead this workshop. June 12 - Finishing and Blocking Blocking is a great way to smooth out imperfections in your knitting, to make pieces uniform in size and to make garments look and fit better. This discussion will focus on the best ways to block different fibers and the tools you'll need to do it. ** We are looking for someone to lead this discussion.
July 10 - Tension Swatches and Christmas in July How many of us knit a tension swatch before every project? Not many. But we all know it's essential to getting a perfect fit to the end garment. It's even more important when it comes to designing and sizing your own patterns. We'll discuss exactly how to knit the best tension swatch, and also how to read/calculate your tension from it afterwards. Note: Anyone attending the Liz Gemmell workshop in August will be required to knit a tension swatch to her specifications! So this topic could come in really handy. ** We are looking for someone to lead this discussion. August 14 - Liz Gemmell Talk & Workshop Liz Gemmell is an Australian knitting rockstar. She has been designing knitwear, authoring books, and teaching knitting in Sydney for years. You can read more about her on the Craft Society website (http://www.artsandcraftsnsw.com.au/CVWoolWoolfelting.htm). Liz will give a general "My Life in Knitting" talk at our meeting, then after a short lunch break she'll be teaching a pattern design and adaptation workshop. Please note: It will be a talking, calculating, paper and drawing workshop, not knitting! There will likely be a small fee, and numbers will be limited. Students will need to have completed a tension swatch as homework. We'll be emailing more details in the future. September 11 - Steeking Judging by the shivers that go through the room whenever anyone mentions cutting their knitting, a steeking workshop is definitely in order! This will be a practical workshop led by Mary-Helen and Sandra. Those who are interested will bring along a knitted tube with a steek worked into it. (M-H and Sandra will provide the pattern ahead of time.) Then at the workshop they'll be taught to crochet up the edges, cut the steek, and pick up stitches to simulate a front/armhole/neckband. It'll work, they promise! October 9 - Entrelac Entrelac is a knitting technique used to create a textured diamond pattern. While the end result resembles basket-woven strips of knitted fabric, the actual material comprises interconnected squares on two different orientations. Mary-Helen has a lot of experience using this technique and will show us all how to do it. November 13 - AGM and Yoga for Knitters In addition to the AGM, our very own Alison (aka Yoga Knitdra) will take us through a workshop on yoga for knitters. We can all benefit from a little stretching and movement! (Alison will also be leading us through five minutes of stretches at each meeting, beginning in March.) December 11 - Christmas Party Fun, food and merriment to wind up the year.
