Details of Liz Gemmell Workshop
Thursday, 15 July 2010

Our August 14th meeting will include a talk and optional workshop with renowned knitting designer Liz Gemmell.

Liz will give a general talk to all our members during our meeting as normal. We'll break for morning tea about 12.00, and about 12.30 the workshop will start.  This is a theoretical workshop with lots of maths, drawing and thinking; a pencil and paper process with no hands on knitting.   The focus will be on adapting patterns to suit your own yarn, your size, your design preferences, changing neck and sleeve details, and so on.

If you want to attend the workshop – sign up at the July meeting and pay $10, or if you cant go to the meeting, contact Rose and arrange to pay your $10.

Homework: You need to do some homework, and make at least one tension swatch BEFORE the workshop. Tension swatches will be the basis for each person's learning. They need to be about 25 cms square, washed or at least soaked and then bashed and dried, to simulate wear and discover how the rows drop and the direction of stretch.  Liz suggests people should trace the square onto paper before doing the washing/bashing/drying to discover any differences in size.  You will learn how to use the swatch to support your own calculations.  She will probably talk about selecting yarns that are suitable for specific purposes.   If you are planning a new garment, use that yarn.  Practice Donna’s blocking techniques too.

Requirements list: tension swatch(es) as above, Paper, pen, calculator, soft drawing pencil, tape measure, pins.
